The Wedding of
William Robert Bontine Cunninghame Graham of Gartmore
and María Fuencisla Cuerdo Astorga
September 3, 2011

The Clan Graham Society congratulates William Robert Bontine Cunninghame Graham of Gartmore and María Fuencisla Cuerdo Astorga who were married on September 3, 2011, in the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Fuencisla, in Segovia, Spain.

Their wedding reception took place at the Portico Real, a restaurant owned by the bride’s relatives. There they joined María’s uncle, Alberto Cándido Lopez (who has the title of “Highest Inkeeper of Castille”) in cutting the local delicacy, cochinillo (suckling pig), in the traditional manner with a plate. Although other innkeepers observe this custom, the right was granted to Cándido Lopez (the father of Alberto, the current owner) by Alfonso XIII, the previous King of Spain, thus making them the only family officially licensed to cut the cochinillo this way. The Lopez family also owns the famous Mesón de Cándido restaurant, which was established beside the Roman aqueduct in 1905, and they later built the Portico Real restaurant.

The newlyweds danced their first waltz as husband and wife to the “Potter Waltz” by Scottish composer Patrick Doyle.

Guests at the wedding included Clan Graham Society members Don and Astrid Graham, who traveled from the United States to witness Robin and María’s special day. They stayed at Hotel Cándido, also built by the Lopez family.

Robin’s relatives (son James Cunninghame Graham, nephew Leo Compe and sister-in-law Ana Cuerdo) shared some wedding photos below.

The couple spent their honeymoon touring Vietnam. The Grahams of Gartmore are generally considered to be the senior cadet of the Grahams of Menteith. Best wishes to the newlyweds!
