Castle Reopens After 15-Year Refurbishment
Maybe 15 years is not long in the life of a 14th century castle, but
that was the length of time it has taken to painstakingly refurbish
the south-west tower of Mugdock Castle in East Dunbartonshire. Located
within Mugdock Country Park, the tower was a dangerous shell, but the
stonework has been repaired and roof and floors reinstated.
Electricity is being provided by solar power and internally the
building has been fitted with 16th century reproduction furniture. It
will now be a major feature in a three-hour audio tour of the park.
Visitors are provided with a rucksack containing maps, binoculars and
an MP3 player which gives a 10-point guided tour. The tower is only
open at weekends, but from the top a special map locates many of
Glasgow's famous landmarks - the city centre is only 6/7 miles away.

Mugdock Castle - Ancient Seat of Clan Graham
1372 - 1700 Built around a courtyard, Mugdock Castle
was entered through a gatehouse with a portcullis. The South
West Tower has four stories with a single room on each floor.
The main entrance to the tower is by external stairs that leads to the
Laird's bedroom. In 1641 the castle was partly destroyed on orders
from Parliament, but James Graham lived there until 1644. On the
execution of James in 1650, the lands were forfeited to the Marquis of
Argyll, Archibald Campbell. In 1655 Mugdock was returned to the
Grahams and restored over a two year period. In 1682 the Grahams
bought Buchanan Old House near Drymen, a dwelling more fitting the
title of "Marquis", but kept the family official seat at Mugdock for a
long period of time.
