Montrose Golf Links to celebrate its 450th year
during the Marquis' 400th birth anniversary

BY DAVID MAY
CONVENER OF THE 450TH COMMITTEE

Montrose Golf Course is the fifth oldest golf course in the world, where play has been recorded on the magnificent Montrose Links since 1562 so in 2012 we are celebrating our 450th year. Our course has hosted many important golfing events including being honoured by the R & A to host the Open Championship Final Qualifying in 1999, and 2007 when the Open was held at nearby Carnoustie. We are looking to recreate what we believe to be the event in history when the first recording of golf being played at Montrose.

Furthermore as well as many other events we are planning a repeat of the only 25 Hole Open tournament ever held, which took place in Montrose in 1866, and was competed for by the greats such as Willie Park, James Braid etc., as well as a hickory shafted competition, 450 golfers playing over the week-end of celebration and we have had discussions with Montrose Museum about an exhibition about golf in Montrose over the years. For further information about the Montrose Golf Courses, go to http://www.montroselinks.co.uk/.

The 450th Committee have planned a programme of golfing and social events during 2012 to celebrate this historic and unique occasion of 450 years of organised golf in Montrose. The Committee are looking to re-create what they believe to be an event in history when the first recording of golf being played at Montrose. Furthermore, as well as many other events, Montrose are planning that 450 golfers will be playing over the week-end of celebration, at the end of June, as well as a organising a special day for junior golfers in the town, the extension to one of the holes to 450 yards. Montrose Golf Links are working with the museum staff in planning a special exhibition to celebrate the 450th.
